Promise 1 - Children's Health

FDA committee gives tentative OK for kids to take antipsychotics (USA Today) Approving the drugs for pediatric use allows the agency to provide information about proper use on the label, said the FDA's Thomas Laughren.

Promise 2 - Child Protection

What we think: Stop letting kids down (Orlando Sentinel) Last year, Gov. Crist held aloft one of the tracking gadgets for onlookers so they could admire a device he declared would "revolutionize" protection for Florida's foster kids. Nice photo op, but what's happened since?

Savings plan benefits teens leaving foster care (USA Today) Foster kids who leave the system at 18 are more likely than other young adults to become homeless, pregnant, unemployed or imprisoned. In a study published in 2005, nearly half the women had been pregnant by 19; nearly a third of the men had been imprisoned after age 17, according to co-author Mark Courtney, a professor of social work at the University of Washington.

Promise 3 - Early Learning

Recession leaves parents hunting for affordable day care (Orlando Sentinel) While some parents who've lost jobs are canceling day-care they no longer need or can no longer afford, some stay-at-home moms are heading back into the work force as they try to make up for income that their husbands have lost through layoffs or reduced hours.

Cynthia Lorenzo appointed to lead Agency for Workforce Innovation (Triangle Business Journal) Cynthia Lorenzo, who has been interim director of the Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation since February, was named executive director of the agency by Gov. Charlie Crist.

Promise 4 - After School

After-school program spreads to three more schools (TCPalm) The program is free, although parents must provide transportation and pay a small insurance fee for each child. Classes are held three times a week for one hour and are available to third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students.

Foundations Get Together to Fund After-School Centers (First Coast News) Southland Waste Systems (SWS) has teamed up with The Boselli Foundation to create after-school centers for children on the First Coast.

Promise 5 - Juvenile Justice

Prevention and intervention main focus of Florida juvenile justice (Southwest Florida's News-Press) Gov. Charlie Crist's vision for a safe Florida led to the creation of the Blueprint Commission charged with developing recommendations to reform the juvenile justice system. The Department of Juvenile Justice will continue to push forward passage of its implementation and focus our ongoing efforts to promote prevention and intervention.

All Promises

We're listening (Tallahassee Democrat) Although there isn't single solution to the problems these children face — homelessness, a need to belong, a desire for respect — we are fortunate that we possess the resources (time, a listening ear, wisdom, jobs) they need to survive adolescence and thrive as adults. Listening to them is the best way to adequately understand the world they live in.
